Large amounts of people require large amounts of cooling and this becomes a greater problem in temperate countries, that for the majority of the year, have no issues delivering the cooling demanded. This becomes an issue in hot weather when the cooling capacity of the air handling unit is dealing with the latent load. This is where the evaporator coil has to remove the water from the air being treated before cooling can be achieved. This will greatly reduce the sensible cooling effect. This is more noticeable over the past 5 years in the UK as we have had record temperatures with high humidity on cooling equipment that is not designed to handle the latent load.
Desiccant Dryair supply standard dehumidifiers installed in series or parallel with standard already existing cooling equipment. The dehumidifier will take care of the latent load allowing the cooling plant to give cooling effect. The dehumidifier is more efficient at this part of psychrometrics and even higher efficiencies can be gained by using waste heat for the regeneration of the desiccant wheel.
For new build hospitals Desiccant Dryair have installed desiccant cooling units. They come in many different combinations from full silica gel desiccant wheels, enthalpy wheels, latent cooling coils, sensible wheels, sensible cooling coils and evaporative cooling / humidification. All components will be within a single unit and the final combination will depend on the ambient condition and the desired final condition.
Controlling the desiccant cooling requires a vast amount of temperature and humidity sensors. This means that the desiccant cooling will operate to incredibly high efficiencies reducing the mechanical cooling equipment size dramatically.
